Skin wrinkles – types and causes of wrinkles on the face.
Which skin wrinkles are there and what are their causes? Learn interesting facts about frown lines, crow’s feet and Co. and the structural protein, which is particularly important for the function of the skin.
FOREHEAD TRANSVERSE WRINKLES
Synonym: worry lines
Transverse forehead wrinkles are dynamic wrinkles that are mainly caused by the mimic contraction of the facial muscles (e.g., worry, anger). These wrinkles can be treated by paralyzing the facial muscles (e.g. with botulinum toxin). However, the emotional facial expression is often lost in the process, so that an unnatural impression is created. Dry skin makes the transverse wrinkles on the forehead look more massive.
Crow's feet
Synonym: periorbital wrinkles
Crow’s feet are wrinkles in the eye area. These are reminiscent of real crow’s feet because of their radiating structure. Similar to the transverse forehead wrinkle, the frown line is often caused by exaggerated facial expressions or permanent straining of the eyes. The resulting lines can become deeply embedded in the skin over the years. Often they remain visible even in a relaxed state. Crow’s feet are particularly visible when the skin is dry and therefore lacks elasticity.
NASOLABIAL FOLDS
Synonym: nasolabial groove
Nasolabial folds are located between the wings of the nose and the corners of the mouth. They make the face look older and give a tired impression. The main reasons for nasolabial folds are natural structural processes and a genetic predisposition. As with all wrinkles, it is also true for the nasolabial fold that dry skin clearly emphasizes the wrinkle.
TRANSVERSE CHIN WRINKLES
Synonym: Strawberry chin
Transverse chin wrinkles – as the name suggests – run across the chin, resulting in an uneven impression of the chin. These wrinkles are caused by the mimic contraction of the facial muscles.
WRATHFUL FOLDS
Synonyms: concentration wrinkle, glabellar wrinkle, thinker’s wrinkle, grimace wrinkle.
The frown line is a mimic wrinkle that forms mainly when the mimic muscles are tensed above the root of the nose. Wrinkles of this type can appear vertically, obliquely or horizontally. They give the impression of negative emotions and make the face look older. The frown line has no disease value and is usually treated only for cosmetic reasons.
HASH FOLDING
Synonym: Witch wrinkles
Bunny wrinkles are located on the lateral bridge of the nose. They are caused by wrinkling the nose or when laughing.
UPPER LIP WRINKLES
Synonyms: pleated wrinkles, perioral wrinkles.
Upper lip wrinkles are usually vertical wrinkles on the upper lip. These wrinkles are caused on the one hand by the natural aging process, and on the other hand by long-term smoking. Frequently, too dry skin status is also the basis for upper lip wrinkles to develop.
NECK FOLDS
z. e.g. turkey neck, platysma bands, transverse neck wrinkles.
Wrinkles in the neck area are also caused by the natural aging process, thinning skin and reduced subcutaneous fat tissue, and muscle contractions. If the wrinkles run vertically, they are called turkey neck. It is not uncommon for vertical wrinkles to be accompanied by transverse wrinkles in the lateral area.
